Muijs is a seafood company based in Bunschoten-Spakenburg, the Netherlands, which was founded in 2004. Muijs Seafood has a wide range of fish products. In order to be able to guarantee the freshness of the fish products, the company buys fresh fish directly from the fish farms of origin every day.
EPS is undoubtedly the best packaging for the transport of fish products, due to its ability to keep items fresh, shock resistant capabilities and low transport costs. Unfortunately, these EPS fish boxes are often disposed of as waste in landfills after they have completed their packing and transport tasks. As a result, as sales grow, so do piles of discarded EPS seafood boxes. Whether it is transported to landfill or a specialised organisation is found to dispose of this waste, it can be a cumbersome and expensive affair.
According to EU food industry regulations, used EPS seafood containers cannot be used again, meaning the containers are worthless when they are discarded. Their large size and the fact that they take up a large volume of space, coupled with high transport costs, means that recyclers are often unable to collect used cartons in time. However, these waste fish crates are stored in factories for long periods of time and not only have an unpleasant smell, but also tend to lead to safety hazards and can easily cause fires if they are not careful. Therefore, how to dispose of these crate wastes had become the most troubling issue for Muijs Seafood.
In 2013, Muijs Seafood first learned through GREENMAX that after the EPS compactor process, all the air in the fish crates is squeezed out. This has the effect of reducing the volume and lowering the space occupation. Also, by squeezing out the air, the safety risk of the fish box is reduced and the compactor can be sold to INTCO recycling (GREENMAX's parent company) to be made into an end-use photo frame product, which is a very environmentally friendly way of handling the boxes.
Initially, Muijs Seafoods first purchased the GREENMAX A-C200 EPS compactor to help them with their EPS recycling and for the next 8 years Muijs Seafoods continued to use the EPS compactor to dispose of their fish box waste. They have gone to great lengths to introduce GREENMAX to other companies with the same problem.
In 2021, with the establishment of a new plant, Muijs Seafood again purchased a second A-C200 marine standard EPS compactor from GREENMAX, and the owners of Muijs Seafood, WIM, have promised to dispose of more waste fish boxes in the future. EPS fish boxes are no longer a waste product, but a valuable resource for people.
